Hello to our friend and customer John Wiercinski, who when he dropped off his work today, returned $4000.00 worth (a little exaggeration) of hangers to us for re-use and recycling. We thanked him and said we would put his name in the paper to recognize his accomplishment. He also sent us a new customer and we appreciate it. Thanks again John.

John knows, and you should try to remember, that we pay you for returned hangers when you drop off cleaning by taking money of your cleaning invoice right then.

We use high quality expensive hangers that keep the shape of your clothes.

The suit and coat hangers we use cost us almost $1 to buy, and we give you 20 cents for them when you bring them back. We re-use the good ones and recycle the broken ones.

Our shirt hangers are heavy and cost us 13 cents. We give you a nickel back for them.

We give at least one cent for the crappy hangers you bring us from other cleaners. They are cheap and we don’t use them, but we keep them out of the landfill by recycling them.

6 Things Other Dry Cleaners Won’t Tell You (but we will)     12.1.10

1. Women are charged more.If you bring in a standard wool suit without pleats or fancy trim, you will pay us the same as a man pays for his suit. Beyond that, women’s clothes are smaller and have more ornamentation, so they require more time and care in finishing resulting in higher prices.
2. Organic Cleaning Isn’t Really Green. Hydrocarbon is an organic (comes from the earth) solvent, but almost as toxic as Perc, the most commonly used and highly toxic solvent. Florey and Holloway is the only truly GREEN Cleaner in the Scranton area. We use only non-toxic biodegradable cleaners.
3. Bring Clothes in the Off Season for the Quickest Turnaround. Many local cleaners are just drop stores and take a week to clean your clothes, but will improve on that if you bring your clothes in the slow months, January, February, July and August. Florey and Holloway clean on premises and have normal 3 day turnaround year round, with same day service available Monday thru Saturday.
4. Most Clothes Don’t Need to be Dry Cleaned. We estimate that about 70% of the clothes we clean are washable and could be done at home. The reasons these customers use our services are ; expert stain removal, expert pressing and finishing, clothes last longer and CONVENIENCE.
5. How You Store Your Clothes is as Important as How You Clean Them.Never Store your clothes in the plastic bags the dry cleaner puts them in. The plastic breaks down and will streak and discolor garments.
6. Treat Stains Right Away. The longer a stain goes untreated, the more likely it will oxidize and set into the fabric.

How to keep your dry cleaner happy :-)                                                         9-1-10   

   On September 6, 2010 we will be celebrating Labor Day by not working, we will be closed, and pass our fourth anniversary in business. It has been a great four years. We have experienced remarkable growth; in spite of the recession, and while others have not been as fortunate.

  We owe our success to hard work, long hours, and the best customers we could have imagined. Truly our customers are the best. They show appreciation and support for the good work we do, and are forgiving when we mess up. Each of us has years of experience working for other dry cleaners, and therefore have a true understanding how lucky we are.  

So on to the topic. HOW TO KEEP YOUR DRY CLEANER HAPPY.  

   Assuming you want to keep your dry cleaner happy, it’s really quite simple. When you drop off your cleaning, and there is something among your clothes that is especially dear to you, a favorite garment, or something pretty expensive, what do you say to your cleaner?

1) “This garment is special to me and I brought it to you because you always do a great job.”

                                                ………or………

2) “This garment is very expensive, so please be extra careful with it, I don’t want it ruined.”

If you chose number one you must have found a great dry cleaner.

   A company and people you trust whose abilities’ you have confidence in. By expressing it the way you did, you already made them feel appreciated which made them happy. Good job.  

   If you chose number two, you need a new dry cleaner. You have a serious lack of confidence in your dry cleaners abilities, and you just insulted them.

   Good dry cleaners know they are good, and bad ones think they are good. When you urge for extra care to be taken, you suggest good care is not the norm and insult them both. Bad job.  

   Florey and Holloway Cleaners LLP are in the happy position to be complimented by our great customers regularly, and we are very grateful for the support. Sometimes a new customer will tell us to be extra careful with something. We don’t get upset. We understand that the fear of what their old cleaner might do is what made them to try us. Based on a survey I read, and my opinion, here is an answer.

Shirts, polo’s, blouses…………………….after each wearing

Suits, dresses and skirts………….……….after 3-4 wearings

Blazers, vests, sweaters…………….…….after 4-5 wearings

Outer coats and jackets…………….……..twice a year

Blankets, quilts, spreads………….………twice a year

When you get a spill or stain on something, bring it in right away and you will greatly improve the odds of successful spot removal. Do not pre-spot your dry clean clothes, you might set the stain.

If you have allergies to dust and dust mites you will want to clean your favorite garments frequently.

READ THE GARMENT CARE LABEL BEFORE YOU BUY.

Two short examples of why.

First case.

A beautiful prom gown arrives at my counter. First I read the care label which tells the manufacturers recommended cleaning and care methods. The care label, by Federal Law, must have written instructions and international symbols to instruct in the care and cleaning of the garment. The label here says “do not wash, do not dry clean, do not steam, professionally spot clean only, exclusive of trims”. This gown has lots of trims. Not the usual beads and sequins but peel and stick gold shiny labels stuck on all over.

Many times I use my professional judgment based on my knowledge and experience, and successfully clean and press garments like this one, at owner risk, even though the label says it should not be done.

In this case, the peel and stick gold forces me to refuse to clean the dress. In my judgment, any type of cleaning will damage some stickers.

The customer is upset because I won’t clean the dress and says, “But I paid $500.00 for that dress”. All I can say is that I’m sorry, but you should have read the care label before you bought the dress.

Second case.

          A new black sport shirt came in today with a route customers regular work. It is an expensive looking shirt, with pocket flaps and snaps. The care label says “hand wash cold separately, hang to dry, cool iron if necessary, do not iron buttons, do not dry clean”. Translation “ if you machine wash me my dye will bleed all over, if you put me in the dryer I will shrink and wrinkle, a warm iron will make me shiny, my fancy buttons will crack and break if you iron them, my fancy buttons will dissolve if you dry clean me and I will fade a lot”.

          The message here is not to discourage the purchase of fancy clothes that require special handling. We excel at cleaning and finishing special care garments.

          The message is read care labels before you buy. Then, you won’t be surprised when you get your cleaning back and see that your button down business shirts cost only $2.30 to look beautiful, but that new sport shirt cost $9.50 to clean because of all the special care it requires.

DRY CLEANING?                                        1/1/10

To start off the New Year, I want to remind you that we are a GREEN Dry Cleaner, aka Organic Cleaner. We use GREEN JET dry cleaning, and wet cleaning to safely and effectively clean clothes. Our methods are Solvent-Free and therefore safe for people, pets, and the environment, and clean much better than solvent based methods.

To give you a better appreciation of what a big deal it really is to be a GREEN Cleaner, you need to have a better understanding of what the other cleaners are doing to your clothes. All the other cleaners in NE PA are solvent based. Here is what they do.

Picture a huge front load washing machine. This special washer uses a chemical solvent to wash your dry clean clothes. Solvent based cleaning is not dry. A solvent similar to lighter fluid is used. The solvent used, usually Perc, is flammable, causes cancer, depletes ozone, pollutes the ground and ground water, and creates Hazardous Waste as a by-product of the process. The solvent Perc is being phased out of use in New York , New Jersey and California now. Other states, and even some cities, are considering banning Perc, and some other solvents.

At a solvent based cleaner, your clothes are placed in the machine along with other customers clothes, including the ones with poop, pee, vomit, mud, grease, oil, food etc. Together, they are washed in the same solvent, and as the contaminants loosen from the clothes, and in spite of the filters in the machine, a layer of filth covers all the clothes. There is no rinse cycle. No kidding. The clothes are then dryed in the same machine, effectively baking the filthy solvent onto the clothes. The dirty solvent was pumped into a holding tank and will be re-used all day long on all the other clothes that day. After the process, your clothes look cleaner because visible stains have been broken down enough not to be visible, but the tell-tale solvent smell remains. Now you know why your white coat comes back a little grayer every time a solvent based cleaner has it. Solvent based dry cleaning is pretty disgusting. But people are still paying good money for it to be done to their clothes, along with the collateral damage to the environment and health risks.

Now the GOOD NEWS.

Our cleaning methods are safe for people and pets, safe for clothes, and safe for the planet. Our cleaning methods remove dirt and other contaminants without re-depositing them on other clothes. Our methods can be used to remove the contamination from clothes put there by solvent based cleaners, even make your white coat white again. Our cleaning methods are the ones recommended to cleaners by the EPA and the states of  NY and NJ and CA where perc solvent use is being phased out.
